Sorry guys, no C=Carbon yet. I am still
incubating my brain over the topic (come on, give me a break), and I have other
thoughts and stories that are too good to pass.
Well it’s been a while since my narration was
taken over by the scientist that I think I am. Scientific writing could be
dangerous sometimes, it is meant to report facts as if there is no magic in
life. I mean, it’s not science’s fault right, well if we are allowed to write
scientific papers as if we write poetry, it might sound:
Instead of this:
“We observed higher carbon release as microbial
CO2 respiration in soil when there is a higher input of carbon sources via
plant root exudation. This might have an important consequence in the future
given that increase in atmospheric CO2 level by anthropogenic activities may
increase plant productivity and therefore belowground plant carbon production,
creating a negative feedback on soil as important carbon sink.”
Like this:
“The human
race is destined to destruct itself. Supertramp got it right- when they were
young life was wonderful, until they were sent to be educated to be sensible
which turned out to be cynical, because they never taught you that in the end
you will have to sell your soul to work for companies that are all trying to
pollute the world and destruct themselves- all in the cheapest possible ways. We
are now confronted with the most critical issue of the human race, we have to
act now- or perished. Climate change is real. Soil may lose its capacity to
store carbon, it in fact stores most carbon than all the plants and humans and
animals combined on planet earth. Only Ocean has more carbon than soil, but its
availability to store carbon could one day be saturated, and who knows what
might happen when the temperature is warming up. So, we are all doomed.”
Shit, I wanted to tell another story actually
but hey it sounds pretty good. Anyways. I wasn’t contemplating on writing
styles, just random thoughts. And some rantings.
The story that I wanted to tell was:
"In the end we are all just human.
I was fortunate enough to be in a wonderful Czech
city called Litomyšl
recently, for a scientific conference. It was a great opportunity, because a
lot of my scientific idols were there. I mean those are the mysterious authors whose
works that I have been citing a lot for my own study. Being there, listening to
their talks, and seeing them in person, was kind of amazing. But by this we may
easily forget that these people, hopefully one day we have the fortune to
become, are regular human beings too.
One evening, we had the conference dinner. On the
way home, we kind of headed towards the wrong direction, because we exited the
building from different door. So as we turned towards the right path, and this elderly gentleman walked towards us, obviously as lost as we have been. So we explained about
the wrong door and what not. So of course he came from the dinner as well, and
was one of the conference attendee. As we walked he was commenting about the
awesome singers who had just performed during the dinner, and how crazy these
non-English-native singers seemed to transformed into some kind of Mississippi
locals the moment they started to sing. Well he’s American. Interesting. I
stole a glance towards his name tag (well, we all have one), and saw that, What..
I use his idea for my big experiment. This was THAT guy. Cool.
Or the other day we were having a field trip, and I
wanted to talk to this another American ecologist but I just seemed not tactful
enough to say/ask something unless I absolutely meant it. But in the end we talked,
instead of science questions I have conjured up in my brain, we kind of talked
about dumplings. And Ben and Jerry ice-cream. Well, who gives a shit about
science and climate change.
Well, in the end we are all just human."
Thanks for reading =)
